Oklahoma death row inmate Richard Glossip spent nearly a quarter of a hundred years in prison for the death of his manager in 1997. On Thursday, the state’s chief legal officer said the conviction and death sentence of Glossip should be discarded and has consequently registered a move to clean it up as well. The application was exhausted after special guidance suggested a suggestion to remove the manslaughter conviction.
Richard Glossip spent around 26 years in prison after being convicted of soliciting the murder of Barry Van Treese. However, the murder was committed by another worker, Justin Sneed, who was 19 years old at the time. Sneed was jailed for life in exchange for a statement against the 60-year-old Glossip.
As Richard Glossip’s group of guards pointed out, some evidence shows that the death row prisoner is honest. The international law firm Reed Smith, along with Richard’s lawyer, have also attempted to gather evidence of the situation.
In an unfortunate episode on January 7, 1997, Barry Van Treese was knocked to the ground by Justin Sneed. The homicide allegedly occurred at the Best Financial Plan Hotel in Oklahoma City. Van Treese was the owner of the foundation, while Sneed was the gardener and Richard Glossip was then head.
Sneed admitted wrongdoing and decided to assert against Glossip in exchange for a life sentence. He let the police know that it was Richard Glossip who raised him and “hired” him to kill Van Treese. He further said that Glossip agreed to pay him a lump sum of $10,000 should he be able to execute the deal. Glossip, however, maintained his innocence until he was found guilty and sentenced to death in July 1998.
After three years, in 2001, the conviction was dismissed collectively by the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals, as they ensured that the case was “very fragile.” On Thursday a movement was registered that asked to empty the sentence for homicide, adding that another preliminary had to take place. Chief legal officer Gentner F. Drummond wrote in the motion:
Drummond also noted that the state is not asserting that Richard Glossip was not at fault, but noted that the primary variable is that Sneed, who was the vital observer of the situation, misled the jury about his mental treatment. Drummond expressed:
“After thorough and serious consultation, I have come to the conclusion that I cannot stand behind Richard Glossip’s murder conviction and death sentence. This does not mean that I accept that he is honest.
Proceeded:
“However, it is important that Oklahomans have full confidence that capital punishment is handled decently and with conviction. Considering everything I’m familiar with in this case; I really do not accept that a fair result is given in executing a man in light of the statement of a committed observer.”
According to Glossip’s legitimate group, Sneed was using methamphetamine at the time he committed the homicide. He also had a record for trespassing in inn parking lots. Glossip’s conviction caused a stir as he was charged solely in light of Justin Sneed’s statement. Wear Knight, Richard Glossip’s lawyer said,
“It is now certain that it would not be reasonable for the State to go ahead with Mr. Glossip’s execution when there is so much uncertainty surrounding his conviction.”
Knight continued:
“We are grateful to (Legal Director) Drummond for his audacity to investigate this troublesome case and incline the Court of Criminal Applications to swiftly grant the Legal Director’s request and return Mr. Glossip’s case to the pretrial court for further proceedings.”
Following a free examination run by law firm Reed Smith and the Glossip Legitimate Group, the former said the examination “uncovered the state’s deliberate removal of evidence prior to the preliminary examination and the lack of a police examination.” They also found letters that Justin Sneed allegedly wrote in prison. In one of them he composed:

Attorney Knight also mentioned that he realized Sneed needed to “fess up” sooner or later, but he could very well be locked up over the letters that his legal counsel wouldn’t let him do.
The choice of whether Richard’s conviction should be vacated rests with the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals. Until then, the death row inmate is scheduled to be executed on May 18, 2023.
It was initially planned to run on July 1, 2022, but Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt requested a 60-day stay. The execution was then planned for September 2022. Following a further stay request, the execution was pushed back to February 16, 2023. In January, however, it was rescheduled for May.
