Jefferson University Hospital shooter
The robe-clad gunman who allegedly opened fire inside a Philadelphia hospital early Monday, killing a colleague and wounding two police officers during his escape, was reportedly captured. The 55-year-old nursing assistant at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital was wearing gowns and bulletproof vests when he allegedly fatally shot a fellow 43-year-old nursing assistant on the ninth floor shortly after midnight, NBC Philadelphia reported.
The unidentified suspect later took off in a U-Haul. About an hour later, a passerby in West Philadelphia’s Parkside neighborhood called police, who located the gunman, Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw told reporters. The gunman, who was armed with a rifle and a pistol, opened fire on the police officers, wounding two, before being hit in the upper body and neck with returning fire, the senior police officer said.
One officer was shot in the shoulder and the other was hit in the nose, but both are expected to recover, according to the news outlet. The suspect was listed in critical condition, but he is also expected to survive, police said. Police are investigating the motive for the shooting. “We think he signed up for another employee. The reasons why, at this point, we still don’t know, “Outlaw said, according to 6ABC.
Shooting incidents in Pennsylvania are not uncommon and we have reported these tragedies in the past. For example, 25-year-old Isiah Hampton was arrested on September 18 for shooting three people at his own baby shower. Things reportedly took a violent turn after Hampton had an altercation with an anonymous woman over gifts at the event. In July, two people were killed and a girl was injured in a triple shooting at a Philadelphia barbecue during July 4 celebrations. In March, a shooting occurred inside a Philadelphia shopping mall food court that resulted in the death of a 21-year-old.
Police have not yet released the name of the shooter who is described as a man wearing a blue uniform, a mask, and a black backpack. It has not yet been determined whether he is related to his victim, who later died of gunshot wounds. Action News reported that the suspect was able to flee the hospital after which he hid in a U-Haul. Police were able to trace his location to the Parkside section of the city, where a shooting followed.
The suspect shot two policemen who responded to the fire. He was injured during this exchange, according to investigators. One officer suffered an arm injury while another managed to escape with just a rub on the nose. Both are said to be in stable condition. The suspect is hospitalized at this time and is currently admitted to the hospital. There is no news on the condition of it at the moment, we will update this article as there is a new development in this case.
