A funeral service for an 11-year-old girl who was struck and killed by a stray bullet last week was held in Spalding County on Saturday afternoon at Griffin First Assembly. Asijah Jones, 11, said her family, friends, and instructors were devastated to be gathering for a much more solemn occasion instead, only weeks before her 12th birthday.

Tabitha Thompson, a family member, told FOX 5 that it was “very painful.” Authorities claim that Jones was killed by a bullet that entered their flat via the window early on March 14 when she was resting in bed. Gang activity is thought to have been involved in the shooting. The suspect was identified by authorities as Kionta Parks, 22.

Asijah’s friends, family, and teachers claimed they are still perplexed as to why it occurred. They expressed to Fox 5 how much they will miss her smile and kind nature. She was a kind youngster who did what most kids do, Thompson recalled, adding that she just wanted to have fun.
