Smith, an openly gay classmate of Buster Murdaugh’s, was a resident of Hampton County, South Carolina, and studied nursing. Murdaugh’s name reportedly came up repeatedly during the inquest into the death of Stephen Smith, but there has been no formal indictment against the family or Buster individually in connection with the case.
