Italo Galbiati (8 August 1937 – 8 March 2023) was an Italian football coach and player. He was a trusted assistant to Fabio Capello having worked with Capello at AC Milan, Roma, Juventus, Real Madrid, and England national team. He also managed AC Milan himself on a caretaker basis and was an assistant manager to Capello with the Russia national team.
Galbiati was born in Milan. A midfielder, he played for Inter Milan from 1958 to 1960, only managing to win a single cap, in a Fairs Cup away game against Olympique Lyon. He later served as caretaker for AC Milan during the early 1980s and then joined Fabio Capello as an assistant throughout his managing career. He was described as the ‘good cop’, when dealing with players, as opposed to Capello’s ‘bad cop’

Fabio Capello’s former assistant manager Italo Galbiati has died at the age of 85, it has been announced. Galbiati worked as part of Capello’s backroom staff when the Italian was in charge of England between 2007 and 2012. He also worked with Capello at Real Madrid, Juventus, AC Milan and Roma.
Galbiati also served as Capello’s assistant during his spell in charge of Russia. The former midfielder had served as a caretaker manager on several occasions for AC Milan, before becoming an integral part of Capello’s coaching team.
‘Italo Galbiati, a point of reference in the Rossoneri world and a strong point of many companies in the history of Milan has left us,’ a tribute from AC Milan read. ‘We cling to the family with affection and emotion.’
Galbiati first served as Capello’s assistant at AC Milan, where the Italian head coach led the club to four Serie A titles and the Champions League in the 1990s. Capello and Galbiati worked together at Real Madrid, guiding the Spanish giants to the La Liga title in 1997 and repeating the feat in a second spell in charge in 2007.
The coaching team also won Serie A with Roma in 2001. Galbiati had recently been working with Monza, helping the Serie A side’s youth development. Galbiati was reportedly considered to be the ‘good cop’ compared to Capello, with the Italian having a closer relationship with players.
The coaching team led England to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where the Three Lions were beaten in the last-16 by Germany. Galbiati had been a player prior to beginning his coaching career, initially starting out at Inter Milan. The midfielder only made one appearance for Inter before representing Lecce.
