The family of former Australian Winter Olympian Duncan Pugh was left “heartbroken and simply speechless” after his sudden passing at the age of 48. The father-of-two suffered a brain aneurysm at his Perth home last week and first responders were unable to save him. He is survived by his wife McKenzie and his children, ages six and seven.
Pugh suffered a brain hemorrhage on January 25 and died shortly thereafter. His wife shared a heartbreaking obituary published by The West Australian.
“We are heartbroken and simply lost for words. Taken too soon,” McKenzie Pugh wrote.
“You were the rock of our family and you wore your heart on your sleeve. You were so proud of our two sons, the best father anyone could have hoped for. His passion and determination will live forever in our boys.
“You made me feel like the center of your world. We hope you’re hanging out there with Dougie. I love you always, his beloved wife Kenz, the children Charlie and George, and the fluffy Lola ”.
Pugh competed at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver but was forced to watch from the sidelines when a concussion sustained in a crash during the two-man race also ruled him out for the four-man event. Both he and pilot Jeremy Rolleston were knocked unconscious when their sled capsized, sending them all the way upside down.
With a background in the steeplechase, it didn’t take long for Pugh to rise to the top of the bobsled, as he only got his start in the sport in 2007. He also won bronze at the 2009 America’s Cup which was the highlight of his career. of the. Bobsleigh and Skeleton Australia paid tribute to the former Olympian in a devastating post on Facebook.
“Our little bobsleigh family has been dealt a huge blow this week with the passing of Pughie – Vancouver 2010 Olympian Duncan Pugh was and always will be remembered as a legend,” they wrote. “A fantastic father to his children, a loving husband, son, brother and uncle to his family.
“An Olympian with a continuing passion for the sport. He was adored and highly respected as a teacher and loved by all of his friends. Anyone who has had a personal conversation with Dunc will know exactly how easy it was for him to feel comfortable in his presence and appreciative of his friendship.”
Pugh had been a professor at Newman College in Perth for the past 17 years. The school’s interim principal, Dr. Lucie McCrory, notified parents and guardians of the death in a letter.
“It is with a heavy heart that I share with you that our long-serving and highly respected high school teacher, Mr. Duncan Pugh, passed away on January 25, 2023, following a brain aneurysm,” Dr. McCrory wrote.
“Duncan’s contribution to our Newman community is impossible to quantify, his involvement was extensive both in school and in extracurricular activities. His commitment to students and colleagues was unwavering.
“Duncan will be fondly remembered as an important member of the Newman community and he will remain in our hearts for years to come.
“He was well known to many in our community as a devoted family man and fitness advocate. I ask that you keep his wife McKenzie and his children Charlie and George in your prayers.”
