Activists outraged by the shooting death of a 36-year-old double amputee demanded justice and accountability Monday, reports CBS Los Angeles. The Coalition for Community Control of Police and the family of Anthony Lowe Jr. held a press conference to raise awareness of Lowe’s death.

“He was loved,” said his cousin, Ellakeyada Gorum, as she sobbed. “And it’s sad how these cops get away with killing our black people. They just get away with it. He was in a wheelchair. What else could he do? What else could he do?”

Lowe’s mother also spoke at the news conference, which was held in front of the Huntington Park Police Department. “My son was murdered, in a wheelchair with no legs,” said Dorothy Lowe. “They have to do something about it.”

A family spokesman said both of Lowe’s legs were amputated at the knee. He was experiencing a mental health crisis when Huntington Park police shot and killed him Thursday, the spokesman said.

Police said he received a call that a man was stabbed by another man in a wheelchair. Officers said when they arrived on the scene they found Lowe with a 12-inch meat cleaver.

Video taken by a bystander shows Lowe outside of his wheelchair, trying to get away from police by using his arms to propel herself across the ground.

In a statement, the department said officers attempted to shoot Lowe twice, but to no avail. Police said Lowe continued to threaten officers with the knife, prompting the fatal shooting.

Lowe’s family said he could not have been a threat because he was in a wheelchair and they need more responses from law enforcement.

“You knew your lives were not in danger,” Gorum said. “He’s running on his limbs. How cold-hearted can they be?”

Gorum also said the family has heard very little from the department or from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which is assisting in the investigation. “We want justice for our entire family,” Lowe’s sister, Yatoya Toy, said.

It’s unclear if there is any body camera or dashboard video of the shooting, but a nearby business has provided authorities with security footage of the shooting, says CBS L.A. But police have not shared the video.
