Zachary Levi Wiki, Biography

Following the release of the new trailer for Shazam!: Fury of the Gods, the film’s director responded to complaints from fans. The second trailer for the DCU March movie starring Zachary Levi dropped Thursday, with some fans taking to Twitter to make clear their displeasure at the “lots of spoilers” in the new Shazam 2 footage, among other complaints.

The film’s director followed suit, tweeting responses to various fan complaints on Friday.

Responding to several fan Tweets about visual consistency in the new Shazam! Trailer for Fury of the Gods, director David F. Sandberg defended and explained his work.

@FanCultureTalks on Twitter noted inconsistencies in the Shazam 2 trailer, particularly in relation to how things were portrayed.

The video posted by the account shows two inconsistencies. First, there’s distinct battle damage on the left side of Shazam in one shot, but then the battle damage is on the right in another.

A close-up of Shazam then shows him shooting lightning bolts from his left hand. But when the view changes to what appears to be a wide shot of the same scene, the beam shoots out of his right hand.

@FanCultureTalks disputed these two inconsistencies, leading Sandberg to explain:

“I can [acknowledge this]. The editor of the trailer mirrors the first shot to cut better with him flying towards the dragon (they’re separate scenes). The last shot is him shooting lightning a second time, which is why the staff leans like this. He put the staff in his left hand to shoot with his right.”

Sandberg continued, explaining that it’s common practice in trailers to “take… moments… from different parts of the movie and string them together” to make something “flow well:”

“All trailers do this. They take shots, moments and dialogue from different parts of the movie and put them together into something that flows very well as a trailer.”

Separately, Twitter user @DareRider8 questioned the apparent lack of shadows in a shot that shows all of Shazamily turned on.

In response, Sandberg explained that “you don’t get hard shadows in dim light,” showing a photo taken behind the camera to illustrate his point.

You don’t get hard shadows in soft light. Here you can see the edge of where the big diffusion was above.”

In response to all the previous complaints and a tweet from @seanpaune, Sandberg concluded by saying that if people are complaining about such small things, “we’re doing something right.”

“If people’s biggest concerns are soft shadows and inverted shots, I think we’re doing something right.”

A carefully constructed trailer

Sandberg’s responses seem to show that the director not only wants to clear up what may appear to be inconsistencies in his trailer, but that he also cares about how fans feel about said trailer.

A comment on @steezeRNG’s @FanCultureTalks Tweet reads:

“You have 80 followers, you don’t need anyone to talk to you about anything.”

It would have been easy for Sandberg to brush off an account complaining about mirror shots in a trailer, but he didn’t. He took the time to answer and clarify, showing that he wants fans to understand what’s really going on. He makes sure that there are no misunderstandings.

If the movie is treated with a similar level of care and devotion, it will undoubtedly be a favorite of Shazam! fans.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods opens in theaters on March 17.
