Christopher Emmanuel Paul (born May 6, 1985), nicknamed “CP3” and “The Point God”, is an American professional basketball player who plays for the Phoenix Suns of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Paul is widely considered one of the greatest point guards of all time. He has won the NBA Rookie of the Year award, an NBA All-Star Game MVP award, two Olympic gold medals, and led the NBA in assists five times and steals records six times.
He has also been selected to twelve NBA All-Star teams, eleven All-NBA teams, and nine NBA All-Defensive teams. In 2021, he was selected to the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team. He also served as the president of the National Basketball Players Association from August 2013 to August 2021. Among the highest-paid athletes in the world, he has endorsement deals with companies like Jordan Brand and State Farm.
Social media is bombarded with posts reacting to the death of Tire Nichols by police brutality. The 29-year-old man was arrested by the Memphis Police Department on January 7, after beating him badly, and died three days later at a hospital.
“Change is needed at all levels and we all need to do our part. We cannot lose our humanity as a society. To the Nichols family and the Memphis community, my heart goes out to you tonight,” American NBA professional basketball player Chris Paul tweeted, showing his anguish on social media.
He was not the only one who reacted to police brutality. “The senseless loss of life for Tire Nichols has really hit us,” Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins said before the game in an interview with local broadcast partner Bally Sports (via Associated Press). He also added that, “It’s been hard being on tour, not being home. I wish I could extend my arms through this chamber right now to the family. They’re going through a lot.”
Miami, Atlanta, Cleveland, Minnesota, Milwaukee and stars like Lebron James continued to show their support for Mr. Nichols’ family and reacted against police savagery.
Five officers involved in the crime have been fired and charged with murder. Body camera footage circulated on social media shows the young man was severely beaten as he approached his house.
