John Harrell, the head football coach at Rockwall Heath High School in Texas, was suspended after some of the players had to be hospitalized or needed medical attention after being severely punished for doing 300 push-ups. The Rockwall director stated that steps are being taken to find out exactly what caused this catastrophe.
According to the school district, an independent third party was hired to investigate the incident. They said:
“Student safety is a top priority for Rockwall ISD. We will continue to take immediate and appropriate action in the best interest of our students as we address this situation.”
John Harrell has since been placed on administrative leave. He will likely remain suspended until the investigation is complete. The principal informed the parents in a letter that the incident occurred on Friday, January 6, during an out-of-session soccer game.
The letter, however, did not mention the number of students who needed to be hospitalized, nor did it specify exactly what happened to them. According to one parent whose children were hospitalized, John Harrell had athletes do 300 push-ups in an hour without rest or water.
The father stated that his son has been diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis. They asked FOX 4 not to reveal his identity and said:
“As parents, we send our children to school confident that they will be cared for at the highest level. That has been the case until this unfortunate event.”
A youth football team captain claimed that John Harrell was not punishing the players, but rather disciplining them.
Harrell has been with the school’s soccer program as a coach since 2019. He was named Rockwall Heath’s head soccer coach in 2022. Harrell has also coached other soccer programs in North Texas.
Brady Luff, the junior captain of the football team at Rockwall Heath, who was present at the training, said he believes Harrell did not punish the players but rather disciplined them.

“I am praying for all sides that are in the hospital. They are my brothers.”
He contradicted a statement given by one of the parents who said that students were not allowed to drink water or take a break during push-ups. Luff claimed that the water was available for the players and they could leave as well.
He added that Coach Harrell treated the athletes with nothing but respect and that Harrell loves each one of them as if he were his own.
Brady Luff’s mother, Stephanie Luff, also defended the coach. She said:
“So if something was going on with this situation that I thought these kids were being harmed, I would have been the first person in the principal’s office or wherever he has to go to get this done.”
Some of the athletes expressed concern about the impact this incident would have on team morale. A former and senior football player, Caden Washburn, said he felt there were some kids for whom pushups didn’t work well.
Last Monday, Rockwall Heath’s athletics coach sent messages to the families of the players, who were at that off-session match, advising them to watch out for symptoms such as abdominal problems and sharp pain in the arm.
The school district said it has been keeping updates on the affected athletes and has been in contact with their families. John Harrell’s athletic experiences during his career include Head Powerlifting Coach, Running Play Coordinator and Offensive Coordinator. Harrell has also taught Geography and World History before.
His first coaching experience was as the Tight End and Offensive Line Graduate Assistant Coach at the college level at Tarleton State University. John Harrell coached in the same positions at Hutchinson Community College and Coffeyville Community College in Kansas. He has been working as a running game coordinator and head coach at Rockwall Heath High School.
