A former local minister was arrested by Oklahoma City police, but not before he was confronted and physically detained by an adult, who accused him of inappropriately touching a child at a school bus stop.
According to Oklahoma City police, an adult man allegedly saw and videotaped 33-year-old Michael Eric Coghill inappropriately touching a 9-year-old boy Wednesday morning as the boy and other youths waited at a stop. school bus ride in southwest Oklahoma City.
Police said the witness told the reporting officer that a boy had indicated that there was a runner coming to the bus stop and touching the youth while they were waiting for the school bus. The man told police the boy said “the guy had touched him on the back and he didn’t like the way he made him feel.”
The witness told police that he decided to park his car near the bus stop on Wednesday to verify what the boy had told him. The man said he saw Coghill jog past the bus stop once before the youths showed up. The witness told police that he saw Coghill jogging past the bus stop for the second time after the children arrived. The man told police that he watched from his car as Coghill stopped and started touching one of the young men.
The man videotaped the encounter before confronting Coghill for touching the boy. When Coghill tried to run, the witness physically restrained him until police arrived. An altercation ensued between the two men and Coghill was eventually forced to throw himself to the ground by his accuser, according to the police report.
The police conducted an investigation at the scene, which included viewing the video filmed by the witness. Coghill was arrested for a lewd / indecent allegation of a child, according to a police report on the incident. Oklahoma City Police posted information about the incident and the subsequent arrest on the department’s Facebook page.
Coghill was identified as the discipleship minister at Lakehoma Church of Christ in Mustang and previously worked at Choctaw Church of Christ in Choctaw.
According to police, an officer took Coghill to Southwest Medical Center, where doctors said Coghill suffered a skull fracture and a cracked orbital socket on the left side of his face. Police said medical personnel determined that Coghill did not need surgery for his injuries and he was taken to the Oklahoma County jail and booked without incident.
Lakehoma Church of Christ issued the following statement:
“It broke our hearts to learn of the incident that occurred yesterday morning involving Mike Coghill, our discipleship minister. And we were surprised to hear this news through social media today. Mike has a clean background check, and no we have received reports or complaints against him during his tenure at Lake home. Our hearts go out to the family and the child involved in the incident. We encourage everyone to pray for this family during a very difficult time in their lives. ”
The church went on to say that church elders met and determined that it was in the best interest of all parties to relieve Coghill of his duties and that he is no longer on the Lakehoma staff.
