Shelton has been embracing his ’90s country roots lately, redirecting the melancholy with his latest single, “No Body,” and its furiously “absurd” music video.

“I felt like the world needed to live it up momentarily,” Shelton told ET in the game plan for his video, which was shot earlier in the summer at Thelma and Louise’s famous bar in Long Ocean Side, California.

“The thing about this song, when we record it and deal with the consideration around it, it’s like, ‘Man, I couldn’t tell if we were planning on doing this, but it sounds like ’90s country music to me.’ he says. “That’s something I love about Luke Brushes’ records, you know, he looks like he could have made those records during the ’90s and people are genuinely drawn to that.”

Shelton, who made an appearance on the Nashville scene in 1994 before moving on with his self-titled debut collection in 2001, had no problem slipping back into his old boots, so to speak.

“I thought, ‘Man, I’m basically going to go back to the old Blake, put my cap on in a tough spot and put on a straight hairpiece and do a video,’” he jokes. “Because this melody seems like it came out of that period. That’s why I thought it would be a phenomenal song until further notice, however considering how I’m feeling lately, we’re generally pretty extensive for the days of old.”
