Robber blackens CCTV, blasts ATM to rob Rs 11 lakh

Satara, Maharashtra, September 7 (IANS) A thief splashed opaque paint on the CCTV camera and then shot up a Bank of Maharashtra ATM in the state’s Satara local to steal more than Rs 11 lakh at once on Wednesday, police said.

The incident occurred in the city of Nagthane around 2:45 am, at which time the thief with a backpack and his face covered, entered the ATM, while the townspeople were resting.

Staying away from CCTV to hide his personality, he put some opaque paint on it, then used a hazmat to shoot one of the hotel’s two ATMs. He found out how to destroy an ATM and stole Rs 11.16 lakhs while the other ATM suffered some damage, an official from the Borgaon police headquarters said.

“The unstable materials are being inspected and at first glance it appeared to be gelatin-based, but we can only express this after full testing,” an authority said.

According to pre-impact CCTV footage, the looter entered the ATM around 2:30 am and sped off with the heist in just 15 minutes before anyone who heard the blast was able to arrive at the scene.
