It’s been quite some time since Nicki Minaj took the stage at the MTV Video Music Awards and sat back in her elevated spot. Preceding the night’s most famous accolade, the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, the up-and-coming 17-time VMA winner and five-time champion hailed her comeback with an impressive array of her biggest hits.
The rapper wore a pink wig and matching outfit as she performed set pieces such as “Monster,” “Beez in the Trap,” “Second 4 Life,” and “Extremely Bass,” all against a Barbie Dreamhouse landscape, complete with a couple of rooms and a slide.
Just as it was time to perform “Extremely Freaky Girl,” Minaj leaned into the thought-provoking tune as she continued in a post and with male craftsmen wearing cowhide suits. After the extraordinary performance, accounts of fans praising Minaj were heard, before a couple of Barbz people acquainted her with the stage.
After giving all her fans a hug, the 39-year-old artist approached the microphone to express her gratitude to them, as well as her family, fans and allies for supporting her in everything through her vocation.
He started by noticing “all the key people who pushed me forward,” a summary that included Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, and Lauryn Hill. Then there were “people who gave me titanic fits that I’ll always remember,” including Kanye West, Beyonce, Britney Spears and Rihanna.
Immediately after thanking her brand and others for helping to produce her music, Minaj opened up about the people she wishes were still here.
“I wish Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson were here. I wish people understood what they suggested and what they were going through. I wish people would see deep prosperity in a serious way, regardless, for the people you think have the best life,” she said. “I wish Pop Smoke and Juice WRLD and Nipsey Hussle were here.”
Minaj completed her talk by contacting the Barbz, later telling her fans, “You are my children, but I have another child. He calls himself Papa Bear. Father Bear, I love you very much. Mother loves you like this, like this, like this, like this, like this, so much”.
Minaj shares her son, who will be 2 in a month, with her soul mate, Kenneth Petty. Once again, minaj won her most outstanding Moon Person statuette for Best Hip Hop Video in 2011, and landed an assignment this year for Best Hip Hop for her collaboration with Lil Baby, “Do we have a problem?”
Her comeback on the annual fun service follows the release of her new single, “Extremely Freaky Girl,” which has become the rapper’s first number one single as an unaccompanied stuntwoman and third overall. The tune appeared on the Billboard Hot 100 and, according to Billboard, is the essential free-doing maven hip-bounce song since Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop (That Thing)” in 1998.
