Sam Bennett, a backup from Texas A&M University and perhaps one of the best rookie golfers in the United States, is on the Aggies men’s golf team.
Sam was in the junior class in the 2020-2021 school year, the year in which he received the PING First-Team All-America Awards. From that point on, the association’s head coaches gave him a place in the all-seconds first group, putting him in the running for the Ben Hogan Award as a semi-finalist.
Sam was chosen to head to the United States of America at the Arnold Palmer Cup in 2021 after earning three straight wins at Cabo Collegiate, Old Waverly Collegiate and The Aggie Invitational. After a tough battle in the match play quarterfinals, he earned his most memorable match play win over Arkansas in the last opener of the SEC championships. This victory allowed him to play for the title.
After a fruitful run in his sophomore year (2019-2020), Sam received All-America fair notice and PING Second Group All-Southeastern Conference honors. These honors came to him for displaying him in the sophomore title. Although he was injured and unable to compete on both falls, he completed the year with four top 20 showings.
Sam even led his group to a normal score with 71.17, scoring eight rounds with scores of 70 or higher. It was a tie for third place. It was his best finish at the John A. Consumes Intercollegiate. Additionally, he finished tied for sixth at the San Diego Classic, where he earned honors on the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll.
