“It’s really impressive,” Niemi says of the continued fondness for the film, which aired in August 1987. “Exactly when Patrick was alive at the time, he was constantly saying, ‘I’m in my second fan period.’ … I would be pushed by young people who weren’t even considered when the movie came out.”

“Any expert,” he continues, “for their work to come to life and have such a positive impact in such a positive way, how could they possibly need so much more?” Regarding the film’s most infamous scenes, where Swayze’s Johnny picks up Jennifer Grey’s baby, Niemi reveals that his late partner “had that under control always and forever.”

“Patrick loves going out and was prepared enough to do everything,” she says, “so when they need to pull off an exceptional lift, he’s like, ‘I’ve got one for you.'” In 2020, ET confirmed that Gray is set to star in and chief executive produce a sequel to the most beloved ’80s movie, which Swayze was pushed into directly after the success of the main film.

“He wouldn’t repeat the experience,” says Niemi. “[The way they] left was absolutely perfect. There were a couple of content patterns for that movie, at this point Patrick had an assumption made and he wasn’t going to do it just for the money.” Regardless, Swayze wasn’t thrilled about being locked in with a Dirty Dancing sequel, Niemi is banking on useful things for the project.

“Foul Dancing looked like lightning on a stand,” she says. “I don’t think you can at any time absolutely duplicate anything. I think in general you need to start over, but if they do kick it off, I’m confident it’s going to be wonderful and have its own character, character and source of inspiration.”

Likewise, it’s not Dirty Dancing, but rather Swayze’s 1991 film Point Break, which recalls Niemi’s leading screen portrayal of his late partner. During the scene he alludes to, Swayze waves as he falls backwards out of a plane, something Niemi says was “quintessential second Patrick.”

“You should be alert around him, try to keep your cap on,” he jokes. Paying little attention to which Swayze project she watches, though, Niemi admits that, for the most part, there are “a couple of moments that really get to her.”

“We were so used to coordination. For the most part, we worked on each other’s scenes and our conversation and the total of those things,” she realizes. “…I go back and watch a part of his movies, there’s a part of his work where I’m like, ‘God, that was great. You really did it.’ He really buckled down. He is very competent.

It’s not his ability that Niemi misses most about his late life partner, whom he portrays as “extraordinary.”

“I don’t fully accept that there’s something I don’t miss about him,” she says. “…He has so much courage and different things, but all the seemingly irrelevant subtleties remain. It’s his voice, how he smells, everything that put him in the room with you that’s physical.”

“It’s particularly surprising to me as it’s been 13 years since he left. It’s strange. That’s a long time, and it’s especially unusual to have someone so far away and yet have them so phenomenally close to your heart,” adds Niemi. “I feel like he’s with me reliably, clearly it would be great to genuinely have him in the room. I’ll tune in briefly though, we had a rare ride and there’s a lot to be thankful for.”

Niemi was associated with Swayze from 1975 to 2009, when the artist passed away after a battle with a damaging development of the pancreas. It is to honor her late partner that Niemi remains involved with the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, a reason that means eliminating the presence of all those affected by harmful development of the pancreas by advancing legitimate screening, building neighborhoods, patient information and maintenance

“It’s so huge,” Niemi tells ET. “…I’m still in it for Patrick. The fact that he’s gone doesn’t suggest it’s a fight. He was a fighter and I continue with that for him. But also, I know how much anyone else wants, whatever amount of Patrick he’s had, to have a fighting chance. That is something that should still be done with pancreatic infection.”

“We need an early area,” he adds. “…yes, as much as we can freshen up this egg, I think it will help people, the dangerous development of the pancreas, but also in a lot of different places, as it’s very, iffy to treat.”
