At his Kabul seminary, Madrassa Zubeiri, which he had been running for years, Sheikh Haqqani was assassinated by a suicide bomber. According to Al Jazeera, the assailant had one leg amputated and was carrying the explosive hidden in his plastic prosthesis.

Sheikh Haqqani and one of his brothers were killed in the blast, Kabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran told AFP, while three others were injured. International attention has been drawn to the explosion and death of the Islamic cleric as a result of extensive media coverage.

However, according to sources on social media, particularly Twitter, this is not the first time the late Sheikh has been the target of an assassination attempt. He has already escaped two attempts, one in 2013 at Peshawar’s Ring Road and the second on October 27, 2020.

ISIL later that day on its telegraph channels acknowledged responsibility for the attack after Thursday’s incident. According to the organization, the attacker blew up an explosive vest inside the office of the late Taliban scholar. The Islamic State (IS) group previously vowed to kill the preacher, according to WION News.

Their presence signaled concern about ISKP as a supporter and leading figure of the Taliban (ISIS-K). As a result, despite retaking control of Afghanistan a year ago, ISIS had often been attacking the nation. The Afghan branch of ISIL has intensified its attacks on mosques and ethnic minorities throughout Afghanistan.

The Taliban leadership currently faces its biggest security challenge from the spinoff group, which has been around since 2014.
