Commander Susan Mulderick Wiki, Biography, Age, Spouse, Height, Weight, Net Worth, Fast Facts

The people who become trapped at Memorial Medical Center and LifeCare hospitals, two hospitals located in the same building in New Orleans, Louisiana, during Hurricane Katrina and the storm that followed, are the focus of the Apple TV+ medical drama “Five Days at Memorial”. Susan Mulderick, Memorial Incident Commander, directs and inspires her doctors and nurses to care for patients and their families as the hurricane wreaks havoc and flooding isolates hospital facilities. Susan begins the evacuation process by asking for help immediately. The audience must be interested in knowing if Susan has a real-life equivalent since she plays such a prominent role in the Memorial. Let’s discuss the solution!

Yes, Susan Mulderick is modeled after the incident commander of the Memorial Medical Center of the same name at the time (currently known as Ochsner Baptist Medical Center). Susan oversaw hospital operations during Hurricane Katrina and the days that followed. At the time, she was also the hospital’s director of nursing. Mulderick was instrumental in developing the Memorial’s disaster plan, which lacked direction in the event of a total power outage or flood, as the long-time chair of the hospital’s emergency preparedness committee.

Mulderick had to be worried about LifeCare patients as well as Memorial. According to the Sheri Fink show’s eponymous source book, Mulderick informed LifeCare’s Diane Robichaux that “the plan is not to leave any living patients behind” when she asked Mulderick about the evacuation. Mulderick was questioned by authorities investigating the death of many patients who were in the Memorial hospital structure. He admitted to having many conversations with Dr. Anne Pou, who was later charged with second-degree murder in connection with the deaths of four LifeCare patients who were administered lethal amounts of morphine or other drugs.

Mulderick reportedly told the investigator, “One of those conversations had to do with, uh, asking [Pou] if some of these people can be given something for what I thought was their suffering, their fear and their agony.” Mulderick denied having any conversations with anyone about ending people’s lives when asked about it by the investigator. According to Sheri Fink’s book, the investigator also asked if he had ever discussed “palliative treatment that would result in his [patients’] deaths” or “anything that reduces their agony, but can also speed up the dying process.” “My conversations with, well, they involved hospice care. She replied: “Comfort the patients, don’t rush a procedure like that.

Mulderick’s comments during the “five days” are different from what Richard Deichmann, chairman of the Memorial’s medical department at the time, recalls. Deichmann responded to Mulderick’s question about whether it would be “humane” for hospital patients who are “not resuscitated” to be executed by saying, “There is no need to sacrifice anyone,” in his autobiography, “Code Blue.” Mulderick denied discussing the euthanasia of patients with Deichmann or anyone else at Memorial during that time through his attorney.

Susan Mulderick has gone to great lengths to avoid media exposure following the incidents that occurred at the Memorial following Hurricane Katrina. Mulderick declined to be formally interviewed about the days after Hurricane Katrina when contacted by Sheri Fink, the author of the show’s original text, for an article that was published in August 2009 and served as the basis. Since then, it seems that she has maintained this position and has avoided speaking in public about her life or what happened at the Memorial.

Mulderick currently works as the Director of Performance Improvement at a health-related nonprofit in New Orleans, Louisiana, according to the sources. She also made the decision to live a completely private life.
