When she broke up with him ten days later and, on August 19, she knocked on the door of a random woman in the desert, the complexity of her mental anguish was further intensified. She traveled from Los Angeles to Cantua Creek outside Fresno, California, where she abandoned her truck on the side of the road. Before knocking on Araceli Campiz’s door, she walked almost two kilometers in a bra and shorts. Araceli was puzzled but she recognized Heche right away. Campiz reportedly added, “she was thinking, ‘Oh my God, we’re in the middle of nowhere,’ and she walks in,” as quoted by People at the time.

Heche “took off her Nikes and said she needed to take a shower,” according to Campiz, and she had no problem with that. Campiz described how she was certain that Heche was not under the influence of alcohol, drugs or a high. However, the actress finally admitted to having used ecstasy. Campiz soon began to worry that Heche had not made any calls to friends or family in at least 30 minutes. According to a story on KSEE-TV, Campiz eventually called the sheriff’s office, and when they arrived, Heche informed them that she was “God, and she was coming to take everyone to heaven…in a spaceship.” Heche is now being treated for burns in hospital.
