As Jones repeatedly claimed on his well-known right-wing podcast, Infowars, that the Sandy Hook school shooting was fake, Neil Heslin and Scarlett Lewis wanted $150 million from him. The parents’ attorney alleged that Jones made money from his claims that the US government orchestrated Sandy Hook and other mass shootings to tighten gun control regulations and thus control the public.

The Independent claims that leaked text messages between Alex Jones and his lawyers showed that the Infowars host had made huge sums of money selling products through his shows. The exposure of him as a result of the conspiracy theories he promoted about the Sandy Hook shooting, on the advice of Heslin and Lewis, is what caused this.

Wesley Todd Ball, the attorney for Heslin and Lewis, said in a CNN interview that the case should serve as a lesson to people who make money spreading false information.

Jones argued that the penalty was excessive because it would force Infowars to file for bankruptcy. Ball responded by stating that this was the intended result and that it would be impossible for him to continue to have a platform.

Ball admitted that even $45 million in punitive penalties would not have been enough to lessen the Infowars host’s impact in light of published texts, which showed how much money Jones had actually made from the podcast.

In court, Jones’ attorney, F. Andino Reynal, said the punishment would not have a deterrent effect. Reynal, in contrast to Ball, asserted that Jones was crucial in opposing shady practices allegedly employed by the US government.

Jones claimed in court Wednesday that the massacre was real. However, he also claimed in court that the government is undermining him by using Scarlett Lewis and Neil Heslin as tools.
