Kilpatrick told AL.com that he responded to Cullman Regional Medical Center Sunday afternoon. LJ died in the hospital, he said. According to KidsandCars.org, 17 children have died in a hot car this year. LJ is the first in Alabama. Temperatures in Cullman County approached 90 degrees Sunday afternoon; Inside a closed car, that temperature can quickly exceed 100 degrees, and a child’s body can overheat 3 to 5 times faster than that of an adult.

LJ appears to be the 16th child to die in a hot car nationally this year, according to KidsandCars.org, and the first in Alabama by 2021. Twenty-six children died in hot cars nationwide in 2020, including three in Alabama.
