In the next issue of People Magazine Investigates, the future executioner’s grim murder case will be looked at through the eyes of Vanessa Bennett, who lost her entire family to the case.
The episode called “The Colorado Hammer Killer” airs July 11 at 9:00 PM ET. It will accurately describe the attacks of 1984 by the “hammer executioner” also known as Alex Ewing. The People Magazine Investigates episode will also discuss how it took 38 years for Ewing to be found guilty of the murders, carrying equity for the individuals he killed.
It wasn’t until 2018 that the police and the murdered people understood that a chronic executioner was in prison, where he should have been all along. Ewing, who is currently 61, is in prison for being identified as the real culprit for the murders of three Bennett and Patricia Smith family members in 2021 and 2022. He faces four consecutive life sentences for each of these murders. .

Individuals Magazine Investigates: The Colorado Hammer Killer Killed the Bennetts Mercilessly in 1984 Alex Ewing entered the Bennett family home in Aurora, Colorado through the carport on January 16, 1984. He slipped through the house where there were four individuals living. Bruce, a 27-year-old father, is said to have fought the enthusiast who killed him and died taking revenge when the devotee hit his head with a sled just before severing his carotid artery.
Not long after, Ewing went to see the mother, Debra, who was 26 years old, and their two little girls, Melissa, 7, and Vanessa, 3. He hit them with his hammer after physically assaulting them. The executioner broke the most youthful Bennett’s jaw, skull, arms and legs. She was the main one who had to withstand the attack.
Vanessa was found the next morning between her bed and a wall. She was covered in blood and had been beaten with a hammer, but she was still alive. The once blissful young lady was left without a family when she was the main person to endure the nerve-racking attack.
Bennett discussed her nerve-wracking experience and what it meant to her in another meeting with People magazine:
The victim also said she “considered suicide”, especially when she was young, and that she had been destitute and on medication to try to distance herself from her unbearable past.

Alex Ewing binged in three states in 1984. In January 1984, Ewing committed a 12-day killing spree in Denver. He went after four individuals, three of whom were survivors: Jim and Kim Haubenschild, Donna Holm and Donna Holm. The main family that could not escape the hammer executioner were the Bennetts. A few days earlier, Ewing had brutally murdered 50-year-old Patricia Smith in Lakewood.
Eleven days after the Colorado attacks, Ewing continued his rough-and-tumble Arizona binge by throwing a rock at Roy Williams while he was napping at his Kingman home. In the next attack, on August 9 of that same year in Nevada, he attempted to kill Nancy and Chris Barry with an ax handle. He was imprisoned for attempted murder.
