Who was Valerie Solanas? Born on April 9, 1936, in Ventnor City, New Jersey, Valerie Solanas was an author and activist for extreme women. She faced a very violent adolescence and, as indicated in the book ‘Manufacturing plant Made: Warhol and the Sixties’ by Steven Watson, she shared that her father physically abused her more than once. Furthermore, she left her grandparents’ house at age 15 and, in 1953, she had two children with a married man, who were eventually disposed of. Despite this multitude of difficulties, Valerie graduated from high school with a degree in brain research from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Valerie emerged as a lesbian during the 1950s, and after leaving the University of Minnesota Graduate School of Psychology, she began thinking about her famous ‘Society to Cut Off Men (SCUM)’ Manifesto. Published in 1967, it aims to show that only women can fix the world and that the male sex must be eliminated. She also composed the self-portrait short story ‘A Young Girl’s Primer on How to Attain the Leisure Class’ in 1965.

She gave him a composition for her hype ‘Your Ass’, about a lesbian sex worker who ends up killing a man. She trusted him to deliver the work and acknowledged the content for the survey. However, Warhol noted that the work was generally disgusting and told him that he had missed the point. He proposed to pay her by offering her a job in his suggestive film show ‘Yo, un hombre’.

As Margo put it in the 2014 book ‘Valerie Solanas’ by Breanna Fahs, Valerie pulled out a gun and said, “Okay, you’ll do the play since I’ll shoot Andy Warhol and that’ll make me known and he’ll play popular, and then you will create it”.

Valerie had undoubtedly purchased the firearm a couple of days before then. After engaging Margo, she, at the time, continued The Factory and hoped that Warhol would show up. At 2 p.m., she boarded the elevator despite warnings from Warhol’s close associate and film director, Paul Morrissey. While the craftsman was on a call, Valerie pulled out a .32 Beretta and finished him off three times. The initial two shots missed, but the third penetrated her crucial organs. After being deemed fit to appear in court, she confessed to the charge of negligent assault with intent to injure and was sentenced to three years in prison in June 1969. She served only one year of her sentence and was released in 1971 from prison to New York State women. In a July 1977 meeting with The Village Voice, Valerie supported their activities, saying, “I think of it as an ethical demonstration. What’s more, I think it’s a shame I missed out.
